Mr. Emmitt Buckingham, was born April 17th 1932 to the later James and Pauline (Bailey) Buckingham. Emmitt attended The Bedford County Training School from 1948- 1951, were he excelled in football under the guidance of Coach Witmon. Emmitt played tight end, tackle and wide receiver. He was made captain of the Bedford County Training School Tigers his sophomore year of high schoo.
Emmitt received the nickname Hummingbird from his teammates because he was a fast runner. His story for being so fast was that he wanted his pretty white jersey to stay white for the girls. Emmitt “Hummingbird” Buckingham left The Bedford County Training School his Jr. year to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. During his 21 years of service he received 2 bronze stars, 2 silver stars, a medal and a Presidential Citation.
