MARILYN GIPSON MASSENGALE
Mrs. Alie Flack Dashiell’s legacy in the Bedford County School System spans well over 50 years. Not only did she attend and graduate from Bedford County Training School, she poured herself into a career as an educator, counselor and community service worker. Following her initial retirement in 2013 from Harris Middle School, she was asked and could not refuse the opportunity to return to both Eakin Elementary and East Side Schools offering her expertise in counseling.
Following graduation from BCTS, she completed her Bachelors of Science at A&I State University, now known as Tennessee State University in the areas of Cocational Home Economics and Science, graduating in 1959. Mindful of the historical events of the infamous “Lunch Counter Sit-In’s”, she was employed full-time and completed coursework on schedule.
She completed three years as a classroom teacher at Bedford County Training School when her husband’s career obligations took them to other places in the continental United States. The late Norman F. Dashiell, St. retired as a TSGT from the united States Air Force and together they decided to return to her home in Shelbyville. Mandatory Maternity Leave afforded her the opportunity to work at Motlow Community College for one year as Job Corp Coordinator. Her connection with the College provided employment of area youth through the Summer Job Placement as Coordinator for Bedford County.
While raising a family of four children and teaching 8th grade science at Harris Middle School, Mrs. Dashiell completed her Master’s +40 at Middle Tennessee State University in the area of School Counseling. During this same year, she obtained the status of Career Level III Teacher.
Her professional organization affiliations include: Tennessee Education Association and South Tennessee Counselor’s Association.
A few of many Community Service Awards are: BCTS “Thank You”, 2005, Shelbyville NAACP, 2009, Shelbyville “Dr. Martin Luther King” Committee, 2010, Gilliland Historical Resource Center, 2013, Shelbyville National Negro Business/Professional Women Club 2015.
Mrs. Dashiell’s Masonic Affiliation’s are White Dove Assembly #185 and Rebecca Chapter #34 OES.
Mrs. Dashiell works with the Area Wide Fellowship for Christ and is an active member of Mullin Chapel AME Church, mother of four and grandfather of one.
