Will Porter Martin was born in Giles County to the late Thomas and Bessie D. Martin. He graduated from Bridgeforth High School in 1948. he entered Fisk University in the fall of 1948 on a Football scholarship where he played varsity football for four years.
During his time at Fisk University he was captain of the football team, an all American and dormitory supervisor, he graduated Fisk in 1952 earning his Bachelor of science Degree. He later received his Masters Degree from Tennessee State University in Nashville TN and his Educators Degree from middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. He was offered by the late Mr. Sidney Harris positions at the Bedford County Training School in Shelbyville, TN to teach and coach girls’ basketball team and the football team, he accepted in the 1953-54 school year. He worked long hours in the classroom on the basketball court and football, under his leadership the girls basketball team went on to win the 1965 TSSAA State High School Basketball Tournament at A & I State University in Nashville TN, In 1966 he became Principle of Harris High school after the death of Mr. Harris. During the year of integration he was transferred to the office of the superintendent in the court house as Title 1 supervisor and later as supervisor of attendance. He worked for 42 years for the Board of Education in Shelbyville TN. He is married to Reva Howard. Mr. Martin is a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, he has served as chairman of the trustee board and church treasurer for 23 years. He also served 18 years on the Shelbyville Power Board systems and 7 years on the board of Bedford Board of Agriculture and Education in Shelbyville, TN. He delights in helping others and gives God all credit for his accomplishments.
