Marilyn Gipson Massengale, is one of two children born to the late Thomas Avery and Dillie Louise Gipson. A native of Shelbyville, Bedford County and was educated in the Bedford County School System.

During her High School days, she was class president, member of the Glee Club, the Trio, the Dramatic Club, basketball team, the cheerleader squad and graduated third in her class.

Her education continued at Tennessee State University where she graduated Cumlaude and received a Bachelor Degree in Health Physical Education and Biology, and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.

While there she also met and married Lendell (Coach) Massengale. They have been married Lendell (Coach) Massengale. They have been married for 60 years and are the parents of four children. Lendell Jr., Avery Carvel, Marilyn Louisa and Susan Illene. they are also the proud grandparents of 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Massengale taught for 33 years in public schools and 17 years and as Adjunct Instructor at Motlow State Community College . She is and has been a Senior Tax Advisor and Preparer for H& R Block for 36 years.

Marilyn has contributed much to her community and has received numerous awards for service and dedication. To mention a few: Teacher of the Year, The Shelbyville/Bedford County Chamber of Commerce Franklin Yates Lifetime Award, The Bedford County Medical Center WKIJ/WZNG Volunteer of the Year, the Jim Grider-Gayle Memorial Award, NAACP Community Service Award, The Martin Luther King Award from the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club Inc. and others from churches, educational and community organizations.

She is a faithful member of Scott United Methodist Church, since the age of 17 where she is Recording Secretary, Sunday School Teacher, member of the Adult Choir and often serves from the kitchen to the pulpit and sometimes custodian.

In her spare time (if there is any left) she likes to read, work puzzles, play scrabble, pitch houreshoes, travel, visit children and grandchildren, watching them play basketball, baseball, softball and cheerleading. Watching them in action keeps her busy, but she loves every minute of it.

With love comes passion, something Wayne Buckingham is all too familiar with. The love of basketball has taken him all over the world where he has played professionally on several continents, making stops in the CBA and European leagues.
